Inspiration For Your Holidays

December can, and should, be a key time for your wellness program.  We all make decisions based upon our health and fitness goals.  Thus, if you are not currently exercising regularly – that, in affect, is your decision.

Let’s review the standards of consistent, healthy exercise.  For your heart and cardiovascular systems, aerobic exercise is extremely important.  I like to encourage consistency with your aerobic exercise.  For most of us, it may work more effectively to schedule 20 – 40 minutes of cardiovascular exercise on most days of the week.  Knowing you are striving for daily aerobic activity, may actually be easier to complete, than trying to carve out a longer chunk of time 3 to 4 days per week.  Your strength training guidelines are 2 to 3 challenging workouts each week.  Remember that proper technique and programming are paramount to your strength training success.

Why is December a key month on your wellness calendar?  If you are exercising regularly, it makes great sense to keep on your program through the mine field of holiday events.  I am not a scrooge.  The holidays are very special.  They are very important for enjoying and celebrating all that we have in life with family and friends.  However, I believe you can “Have your cake and eat it too!”

If you are currently exercising consistently, take great pride in your commitment.  Make memories with each special event over the holidays.  Know that it is okay to miss an occasional workout.  If you are being consistent overall, you will be way ahead when the New Year’s parties have died down.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of people are not exercising regularly.  If you fall into this category, you really could help yourself and get on with your 2010 resolutions.  The keys to a successful kickoff to your healthy exercise are:

  • Start slowly, it’s much better to underestimate your current fitness than overestimate your abilities.
  • Set challenging yet achievable goals.
  • Stay off the scale.  You know how your skinny jeans (or your business clothes) fit.  If they are beginning to feel loose after 3 to 4 weeks, then you are on the right track.
  • Work on all three levels; aerobic exercise, strength training and healthy, moderate-caloric dietary choices.

I would like to wish you and your family wonderful and healthy holidays.  Enjoy all of life’s treasures.  I hope you can achieve greater success with your wellness program than you might expect.  Have a healthy day!
